Découverte en remploi dans l’angle du mur d’un bâtiment monumental d’époque impériale, au Sud‑Ouest de l’agora d’Amathonte, cette dédicace inédite en l’honneur des souverains lagides Ptolémée X et Bérénice III, désignés comme « dieux sauveurs », est un cas unique à Chypre. D’abord en raison de la rareté des attestations épigraphiques de ce couple royal qui gouverna depuis Alexandrie l’Empire lagide entre 101 et 88 ; ensuite, parce que l’épithète θεῶν Σωτήρων ne leur est que très rarement attribuée dans la documentation, y compris dans les sources papyrologiques. Enfin, une étude de l’autel et de sa fonction comme élément de remplissage d’un mur à double pare­ment met aussi en lumière certaines caractéristiques de construction du monument où fut trouvé le document.

Η αδηµοσίευτη αναθηµατική επιγραφή προς τιµήν των βασιλέων Πτολεµαίου του 10ου και Βερενίκης της 3ης, οι οποίοι χαρακτηρίζονται ως «θεοί σωτήρες», ανακαλύφθηκε σε δεύτερη χρήση στη γωνία του τοίχου ενός µνηµειακού κτιρίου των αυτοκρατορικών χρόνων, στα νοτιοδυτικά της αγοράς της Αµαθούντος. Αποτελεί µοναδική περίπτωση στην Κύπρο, κατ’ αρχήν λόγω της σπανιότητας των επιγραφικών µαρτυριών για αυτό το βασιλικό ζεύγος, που κυβέρνησε από την Αλεξάνδρεια το βασίλειο των Πτολεµαίων µεταξύ του 101 και του 88 π.Χ., αλλά και του χαρακτηρισµού θεῶν Σωτήρων ο οποίος σπάνια τους αποδίδεται στους παπύρους ή σε άλλες πηγές. Τέλος, η µελέτη του βωµού και της χρήσης του, στο γέµισµα ενός τοίχου µε διπλή όψη, µας βοηθά να κατανοήσουµε ορισµένα χαρακτηριστικά της κατασκευής του κτιρίου όπου βρέθηκε η επιγραφή.

An inscribed altar has been recently found recycled in the corner of a wall belonging to a monumental building from the Roman imperial period, to the southwest of the agora. This inscription, dedicated to Ptolemy X and Berenice III, referred to as ‘saviour gods’, is unique in Cyprus, due to both the paucity of inscriptions mentioning this royal couple who ruled the Lagid empire from Alexandria between 101 and 88, and the unusual epithet, which is hardly ever attributed to them in the sources, including papyrological ones. Last but not least, a study of the altar and its function as filling in a double‑faced wall illuminates some of the characteristics of the construction of the building where the inscription was discovered.
