Marge d’une marge, Marie-Galante, située au sud-est de la Guadeloupe, fait partie intégrante des départements et régions d’Outre-Mer français (DROM) et a pour spécificité d’être un héritage direct des îles cannières qui ont fait la fortune de la façade atlantique française au xviiie siècle. À ce titre la culture de la canne y a une place fondamentale, ainsi que le rhum, boisson alcoolisée tirée du jus de canne. Cet article propose une géographie sociale et culturelle de Marie-Galante au prisme du rhum en envisageant l’importance du rhum dans la constitution d’une géographie spécifique, puis en questionnant sa place dans la société marie-galantaise, et enfin en se penchant sur les leviers possibles de développement que peut représenter le rhum pour l’île.

Marie-Galante, located in the south-east of Guadeloupe, is an integral part of the French overseas departments and regions (DROM) and has the specificity of being a direct legacy of the “cannières” islands which made the fortune of the French Atlantic facade in the eighteenth century. The cultivation of sugarcane has a fundamental place, so has rum, an alcoholic drink made from cane juice. This article proposes to consider a social and cultural geography of Marie-Galante in the prism of rum by addressing its place in the constitution of a specific geography, then by questioning its place in Marie-Galante’s society, and finally by considering the possible levers of development that rum can represent for the island.
