Dans La condition fœtale, Luc Boltanski construit un modèle d’engendrement pour étudier les justifications autour de la pratique de l’avortement. Le recours à l’anthropologie vise à donner un fondement universel à sa théorie de l’engendrement en Occident. De son côté, Pierre Legendre place l’institution généalogique, qu’il définit comme un espace mythique propre à toutes les sociétés, mais ancré en Occident dans l’héritage romano-canonique, au cœur de son anthropologie dogmatique. Dans cet article est examinée la manière dont ces deux auteurs, pour construire une théorie de l’engendrement, articulent l’universel avec les modalités propres à l’Occident et comment ils manient la relation à la religion chrétienne.

In La condition foetale, Luc Boltanski constructs a model of begetting in order to study justifications around the practice of abortion. Drawing upon anthropological premises, he aims to provide a universal foundation for his theory of begetting in the Western world. Pierre Legendre, for his part, places the genealogical institution – which he defines as a mythical space common to all societies but anchored in the West in the Romano-canonical tradition – at the heart of his anthropologie dogmatique. This article examines the ways in which each of these authors, in order to construct a theory of begetting, articulates the universal in Western terms, and how they handle the relation to the Christian religion.
