De quoi le ponton, cette fragile avancée dans la mer, est-il le signe ? Deux œuvres contemporaines, l’une de fiction, Last Orders de Graham Swift, et l’autre relevant du récit de voyage, the Kingdom by the Sea de Paul Theroux, thématisent la figure du ponton, explorant sa situation particulière entre terre et mer et ses paradoxes. Au seuil d’une traversée à la fois rêvée et arrêtée, il occupe une place de choix dans l’imaginaire britannique, manifeste dans l’intertextualité convoquée par les deux auteurs, par un travail subtil sur le regard mais aussi dans leur maniement précis de la langue, notamment au travers des prépositions.

What do piers stand for and wherein lies their power of attraction? Drawing both on a work of fiction, Last Orders by Graham Swift, and on a travel narrative, the Kingdom by the Sea by Paul Theroux, we trace back the history of British piers, their peculiar location by the sea and their paradoxical nature. Piers seem to indicate the threshold of a journey, fantasized yet cut short. Swift and Theroux’s masterful reworking of the theme of piers, replete with intertextual references, open to subtle variations of the gaze and rooted in a precise use of language (notably prepositions) attest to their power on British imagination.
