L’église abbatiale Saint-Martin de Chapaize

Les quelques travaux consacrés jusqu’ici à Saint-Martin de Chapaize sont loin d’avoir épuisé la matière. Une recherche approfondie dans les documents écrits, édités et inédits, a permis de revoir radicalement l’histoire de cet édifice. Une petite abbaye fut créée, probablement aux alentours de 700, à proximité d’un ancien lieu de culte antique, au milieu d’une zone forestière. Ce fut seulement au xiiie siècle qu’elle devint un prieuré de l’abbaye chalonnaise de Saint-Pierre. L’édifice actuel, construit au-dessus d’un bâtiment antérieur, date probablement de la seconde moitié du xe siècle. Dans son premier état, il comportait une nef voûtée d’arêtes ; le clocher, renforcé par plusieurs niveaux de cerclage en bois, ne reçut le second étage de fenêtres que dans un second temps. Au xiiie siècle, peut-être à la suite du nouveau rattachement, fut installé un portail de prestige, peint et muni de plantureux vantaux de fer forgé, toujours en place.

The few works devoted to Saint-Martin de Chapaize to date are far from having exhausted the subject. In-depth research into written documents, both published and unpublished, has enabled us to radically revise the history of this building. A small abbey was created, probably around 700 AD, close to an ancient place of worship, in the middle of a forested area. It was not until the 13th century that it became a priory of the Chalonnaise abbey of Saint-Pierre. The current building, built over an earlier one, probably dates from the second half of the 10th century. In its first state, it had a cross-vaulted nave ; the bell tower, reinforced by several levels of wooden strapping, only received the second storey of windows at a later date. In the 13th century, perhaps as a result of the new annexation, a prestigious, painted gateway was installed, complete with ornate wrought-iron panels, which are still in place today.
