One will recall that Haller’s discoveries on irritability reversed Stahl’s system on the influence of the soul on unconscious operations. However, this system, introduced in France by Sauvages and in England by Whytt, found some supporters who gave it a new form by substituting to the power of the soul another principle similar to van Helmont’s archeus.
