Érigé en mage à l’âge romantique, l’artiste convoque aisément les notions de sacralité, de sacerdoce, de marginalité, de prestige. Traditionnellement opposé au « bourgeois », il cristallise l’engagement dans la vie esthétique, souvent solidaire d’une critique du monde social. Mais qu’en est-il de l’artiste à l’heure où la pensée et la « mentalité » romantiques semblent largement coupées de leur arrière-plan spirituel et ontologique ? Confié à la plume de spécialistes en études théâtrales, design, littérature, philosophie, musicologie et arts plastiques, cet ouvrage interdisciplinaire entend contribuer à une déconstruction critique de l’identité de l’artiste. Quel regard porte ce dernier aujourd’hui sur la valeur qu’il constitue ? Quelles stratégies de représentation adopte-t-il à l’ère de la communication et des réseaux sociaux ? Comment investit-il le champ du politique quand les problématiques de genre et de revendications identitaires entrent dans le débat ? Quelle est la pertinence d’une notion comme la vocation lorsque les destinées sociales se traduisent par des parcours hybrides ? Les textes rassemblés ici fondent sur l’attention aux généalogies historiques de l’artiste l’examen de ses nouvelles identités. Si l’aspiration à s’exprimer subjectivement à travers l’art demeure pour le sujet contemporain d’une extrême puissance, la manière dont elle s’incarne ne cesse d’évoluer, engendrant acuité critique et production d’un imaginaire.

Considered mages in the romantic age, artists easily evoke the notions of the sacred, the priestly, the marginal, and the prestigious. Traditionally set in opposition to the bourgeoisie, they crystallise the commitment to the aesthetic life, often aligned with criticism of the social order. But what of artists when romantic thought and “mentality” seem broadly cut off from their spiritual and ontological background? The writings of specialists in theatre studies, design, literature, philosophy, musicology, and visual arts have been selected for this interdisciplinary work, which aims to contribute to a critical deconstruction of the identity of artists. How do artists see their integral value today? What strategies of representation do they adopt in the era of communications and social networks? How do they enter the political field when the issues around gender and identity-based claims have become part of the debate? What is the relevance of a notion such as vocation when social fates are translated into hybrid pathways? The texts compiled here base the examination of new artistic identities on the awareness of the artist’s historical genealogies. While the aspiration of subjectively expressing oneself through art still has extreme power for the contemporary subject, the way in which it is embodied never stops evolving, engendering critical acuity and the production of an imaginative sphere.
