Performing Khaleejiness on Instagram: Authenticity, hybridity, and belonging

This paper explores the work of a group of Gulf-based Instagram influencers in order to examine the top-down diversity discourses with which they engage, and the way in which their performances affirm or challenge these discourses. I draw on a series of comedic skits that depict everyday encounters with linguistic and cultural difference, focusing in particular on videos that foreground instances of identification of the self and others. Both the themes the influencers explore and the ways in which they pose them inspire active debate among commenters, making the videos a significant site for public negotiation of linguistic and social dimensions of Khaleejiness. Through detailed analysis of the videos and their associated comment sections, I argue that the influencers’ work promotes a cosmopolitan Khaleeji identity with room for espousing both authenticity and hybridity.

Cet article explore le travail d'un groupe d'influenceurs Instagram du Golfe afin d'analyser la façon dont ils interagissent avec les discours institutionnels sur la diversité et la manière dont leurs performances réaffirment ou remettent en question ces discours. Je m'appuie sur une série de sketches comiques d'influenceurs qui décrivent des rencontres quotidiennes impliquant une altérité linguistique et/ou culturelle, en me concentrant en particulier sur les vidéos qui mettent en avant des exemples d'identification de soi et des autres. Les thèmes explorés par les influenceurs et la manière dont ils les présentent suscitent un vif débat parmi les commentateurs, ce qui fait de ces vidéos un lieu de négociation publique des dimensions linguistiques et sociales de l’identité golfique (khaleejiness). Grâce à une analyse détaillée des vidéos et des sections de commentaires associées, cet article montre que le travail des influenceurs promeut une identité khaleeji cosmopolite permettant d'épouser à la fois authenticité et hybridité.

يناقش هذا المقال أعمال مجموعة من أعمال «مؤثرين» خليجيين على منصة انستغرام، بغيةَ تحليل تعاملهم مع الخطابات الرسمية التي تشيد بالتعددية، كما أنه يتطرق إلى مدى اتفاق أو اختلاف أدائهم مع هذه الخطابات. يعتمد البحث على سلسلة من الفيديوهات الكوميدية والاجتماعية التي تصور بعض المواقف اليومية في دول الخليج بين أشخاص تختلف ثقافاتهم ولغاتهم، مع التركيز على المشاهد التي تتناول تصنيف النفس أو الآخر كمنتمي إلى الهوية الخليجية أو كدخيل عليها.تثير الموضوعات وأسلوب المؤثرين ردود فعل كثيرة، وتفسح المجال لنقاش حيّ بين متابعيهم. لذا تمثل هذه الفيديوهات مساحة مهمة لعرض الآراء المختلفة حول الأبعاد اللغوية والاجتماعية للهوية الخليجية. ومن خلال التحليل التفصيلي لمقاطع الفيديو وتعليقات المتابعين، يُظهر البحث كيف تدعو ضمنيا أعمال هؤلاء المؤثرين إلى هوية خليجية كوسموبوليتانية تسمح بالتوفيق ما بين الأصالة والتعددية والتهجين.
