La limite entre orphisme et pythagorisme en Italie préromaine et le problème du terme orphico-pythagoricien

Depuis la fin du xviii e siècle, la recherche a souvent confondu dans un même ensemble orphisme et pythagorisme pour aboutir à la création du syntagme orphico-pythagoricien. Celui‑ci demeure cependant problématique, à la fois dans le champ des études historiques et archéologiques, car il masque à la fois des erreurs de paradigme dans la compréhension de la religion grecque antique et une interprétation vague du pythagorisme. La présente étude propose de donner de rapides définitions de l’orphisme et du pythagorisme au regard des récents travaux sur ces sujets, puis de retracer l’histoire du terme orphico-pythagoricien. Ce parcours historiographique permet alors de mettre en évidence l’impropriété du vocable, en particulier en archéologie, pour des périodes antérieures à la fin de l’époque impériale. Des pistes de réflexion permettent alors d’envisager une individuation plus stricte de l’orphisme et du pythagorisme dans le cadre de de l’étude de certains contextes archéologiques.

Since the end of the 18th century, researchers have often confused Orphism and Pythagoreanism, leading to the creation of the syntagma Orphico-Pythagorean. However, this remains problematic both in the field of historical and archaeological studies, as it hides paradigm errors in the understanding of ancient Greek religion on one hand and a vague interpretation of Pythagoreanism on the other hand. The present study will give brief definitions of Orphism and Pythagoreanism in the light of recent works on these topics and then trace the history of the term Orphico-Pythagorean. This historiographical approach highlights the improper usage of the term, particularly in archaeology, for periods prior to the last two centuries of the Roman Empire. The analysis of certain archaeological contexts will then lead to a stricter identification of Orphism and Pythagoreanism.
