It seemed that the Hundred years war had enabled the aristocraty to attempt a powerful reaction in due time when this obvious opposition between the private interests of the feodal system, on the one hand, and those of « the common property » or « the public welfore », embodied and defended by the leagues of merchants, on the other hand appeared. In 1412-1414, the trial dealing with the excesses made at the toll-bridge of Champtocé, located on the French-breton frontier, thoroughly illustrated the full significance of on economical and political debate, at the end of which, the monarchy set up as the only power able to assert itself against the contradictions of the time, and to take advantage of such a situation.

La guerre de Cent ans est, semble-t-il, l'occasion d'une puissante tentative de réaction aristocratique, au moment déterminant où apparaît cette opposition flagrante entre les intérêts particuliers de la féodalité d'une part, et ceux du « bien commun » ou de la « chose publique », incarnés et défendus par les associations de marchands, d'autre part. Le procès de 1412-1414 à propos des abus commis au péage de Champtocé, situé à la frontière franco-bretonne, illustre parfaitement la véritable portée d'un débat à caractère économico- politique, au terme duquel le pouvoir monarchique s'érige en la seule force capable de s'imposer face aux contradictions de l'époque et d'en tirer profit...
