The writer Pierre Loti and his grandson Pierre Pierre-Loti-Viaud, recently deceased in November, 1993, pertained to two différent générations but were united by destiny when the latter became his grandfather's biographer. The warm reception I receiveid from P. Loti-Viaud allowed me to have access to Loti's treasures, something that probably would not have occurred with his devilish grandfather, who sometimes obliged his visitors to climb up a rope ladder to enter his house... Behind a clowing façade, Loti hid an anxious man, an eternally spoiled little boy pulled in different directions by maternal demands on the one hand and by his own desires, on the other. This was the source of the eternal hopelessness that he bore with him around the world.

L'écrivain Pierre Loti et son petit-fils Pierre Pierre-Loti-Viaud, décédé en novembre 1993 : deux générations différentes que le destin réunit au moment où ce dernier devint le biographe de son grand père. L'accueil chaleureux de P. Loti-Viaud me permit d'avoir accès aux trésors lotiens, ce dont ne m'eut peut-être pas gratifié son aïeul diabolique, lequel obligeait parfois ses visiteurs à emprunter une échelle de corde pour entrer dans sa demeure... L'écrivain pourtant cachait derrière ses pitreries un homme angoissé, un éternel benjamin constamment tiraillé par les exigences maternelles et mis en porte-à-faux avec lui-même, d'où ce perpétuel désespoir qu'il promena à travers le monde.
