Once Charles de Blois had died, his family undertook - with the support of the Franciscains - to make a saint out of him, thus hoping to discredit Jean IV in the sight of the Bretons. Feeling threatened, the latter appealed to the Holy See, which, without condemning this new cuit for its own sake, criticized the mendicant orders of Brittany for having organized it without its formal approval. The Holy See furthermore opened canonization proceedings so as to regain control of the process, much to the Duke' s discontent. Many believers, resenting this dispute, hesitated calling upon Charles and doubted his sainthood.

Se sentant menacé, ce dernier fit appel au Saint-Siège qui, sans condamner ce nouveau culte en lui-même, critiqua les ordres mendiants de Bretagne qui l'avaient organisé sans son aval, et ouvrit - au grand mécontentement du duc - un procès de canonisation pour en reprendre le contrôle.
