During the night of the 26 of August 1855, the slate-quarry workers of Trélazé rebelled and advanced on Angers. Awaited by the army, they were scattered and harshly punished : about two hundreds of them were imprisoned and fifteen were deported to the penal colony. This rebellion was first a riot caused by the price of bread such as a movement of resistance to the worsening of the working conditions. But it was also an attempt to restore the social and democratie Republic led by members of the Marianne, secret society established in the bassin of the Loire. These workers in revolt were betrayed. They were also probably manipulated to the benefit of the authoritarian Empire.

Dans la nuit du 26 au 27 août 1855, les ardoisiers de Trélazé se révoltent et marchent sur Angers. Attendus par l'armée, ils sont dispersés et punis sévèrement : environ 200 prisonniers, 15 déportés au bagne. Cette révolte est d'abord une émeute provoquée par le prix du pain ainsi qu'une tentative de restauration de la République démocratique et sociale animée par des membres de la Marianne, société secrète implantée dans le bassin de la Loire. Les ouvriers révoltés ont été trahis. Ils ont sans doute aussi été manipulés au profit de l'Empire autoritaire.
