The formulation of demographic balances of towns is made difficult due to the insufficient precision of the information f rom which the figures are evaluated : just as the natural movement along with migratory movement is statistically difficult to define due to the changing population. Illegitimate births recorded in the towns, children being brought up by guardians, hospital deaths, marriages recorded in the town yet the couples not wanting to remain in the area ; these are further elements which destroy any signification of over simplified data. The urban population, which includes both individuals and families can only be analysed with regard to single cases although this is further complicated by the very heavy movement between and within the urban districts.

Les bilans démographiques des villes sont rendus difficiles par l'insuffisante précision des données à partir desquelles sont évalués les soldes : aussi bien le mouvement naturel que le mouvement migratoire sont déformés par des échanges de population, mal perçus statistiquement. Les naissances illégitimes enregistrées en ville, les envois d'enfants en nourrice, les décès hospitaliers, les mariages célébrés en ville sans volonté de fixation, sont autant d'éléments qui enlèvent toute signification à des comptages trop simplistes. La population urbaine, somme d'histoires individuelles et familiales, ne peut être analysée que par la reconstitution de ces itinéraires singuliers, compliqués par la très forte mobilité intra et inter-urbaine.
