L'exemple de Casalecchio di Reno, agglomération agricole du sud de l'Italie, dans sa période d'industrialisation montre qu'un très grand nombre d'enfants vivaient avec ou chez leurs grands-parents et permet de faire le point sur la cohabitation des personnes âgées. Les foyers constitués par trois générations qu'on associe en général à l'économie agricole traditionnelle, continuèrent à se développer pendant la phase d'industrialisation et d'urbanisation. Certains changements démographiques survenus au cours de cette période ont eu pour effet de renforcer cette cohabitation. Aux deux extrémités de la période (1871- 1921), le côté paternel de la famille prit de l'importance, si bien que beaucoup d'enfants vivaient chez leurs grands-parents paternels et peu cohabitaient avec leurs grands-parents maternels.
