Le ton verbal bena est caractérisé par un seul ton Haut par mot. Les racines sont atones, et les formes infléchies peuvent être affectées de quatre sortes de mélodie tonale : à l’initiale pré-radicale (PSI), à l’initiale du macrothème (MSI), à l’antépénultième (APU) ou à la pénultième (PU). L’emplacement de H dans une forme infléchie est totalement prévisible sur base d’une combinaison de critères morphophonologiques, tels que la complexité morphologique de la base verbale, le temps et l’aspect verbaux, la forme du suffixe final, et le fait que le verbe soit affirmatif ou négatif.
