The author analyzes the development of political conscienciousness which expresses itself in new ways especially from 1780 on and after the crisis brought on by the war with England. In their project for a restoration of the constitution, the patriots were looking for new forms of collective participation. They brought the bourgeois town militias back into existence and created new ones on the basis of clubs. An armed society was formed under the banner Pro Patria et Libertate; at first it was a military association and then became a political one, it opened its doors to women and made attempts at educating the press and the reading clubs. In Utrecht the political society Concordia was a good example of the vitality of this movement which accounts for the multiplying of these clubs at the time of the second Batavian Revolution of 1795.

L'auteur analyse le mouvement de prise de conscience politique qui s'exprime en termes nouveaux à partir surtout des années 1780 et de la crise née de la guerre avec l'Angleterre. Dans leur plan de restauration constitutionnelle, les patriotes cherchent de nouvelles formes de participation collective. Ils font revivre les milices bourgeoises urbaines, ou en créent de nouvelles sur la base de l'association. Une société armée se constitue sous le sigle Pro Patria et Libertate, qui de militaire devient politique, admettant les femmes, et faisant un effort pédagogique appuyé sur la presse et les clubs de lecture. A Utrecht la société politique Concordia illustre ce mouvement dont la vitalité explique l'abondance des clubs lors de la seconde révolution batave après 1795.
