Alberto Gil Novales, Napoleon, Anti-Napoleon in Spain as from 1815 The number of works on Napoleon published in Spain may seem surprising. They do not exclude some original titles. The desire to know a little more about the Emperor has always aroused curiosity in the peninsula. The political circumstances in Spain have contributed to the extensive Napoleonic bibliography. It includes the epic story of independence and the struggle against bourgeois materialism, both in the verse of Espronceda and during the republican period from 1936-1939, at the height of the civil war. But likewise the opposite phenomenon, opportunistic in tone, comprising many sometimes weird attributions and even works of a scientific bent.

La quantité des œuvres publiées en Espagne sur Napoléon peut paraître surprenante. Elle n'exclut pas des titres originaux. La curiosité pour en savoir un peu plus sur l'empereur a été une constante dans la péninsule. Les circonstances politiques du pays ont contribué à l'essor de la bibliographie sur Napoléon. On y trouve l'épique de l'indépendance et la lutte contre le matérialisme bourgeois tant dans les vers d'Espronceda que dans la période républicaine de 1936-1939, en pleine guerre civile. Mais aussi le phénomène contraire, opportuniste, avec beaucoup d'attributions parfois bizarres, et même des ouvrages à caractère scientifique.
