In 1595, a French verse translation of Ovid’s Metamorphoses was published in Niort, a stronghold of Protestantism in Poitou, and its inclusion of some staves of music invites one to read it by singing. The troubled historical context of this book makes it particularly valuable, as well as the scarcity of explicit traces of the common practice of singing rather than reading long poetic texts. The book also provides evidence of the particular milieu from which it emanates.

En 1595 paraît à Niort, bastion du protestantisme poitevin, une traduction en vers français des Métamorphoses d’Ovide qui, par son inclusion de quelques portées de musique, invite à sa lecture chantée. Le contexte historique troublé de cet ouvrage, ainsi que la rareté des traces explicites de la pratique pourtant commune consistant à chanter plutôt qu’à lire de longs textes poétiques, le rendent particulièrement précieux.
