Frédéric Fabrège, historien et archéologue de la fin du XIXe siècle, a exploré l'île de Maguelone pendant près d'un demi-siècle. Aujourd'hui désert, le site fut siège épiscopal depuis le VIe siècle jusqu'en 1536, avant d'être supplanté par Montpellier. Propriétaire des lieux, l'archéologue a pu pratiquer une fouille extensive des lieux, prenant en compte les découvertes d'ordre architectural et funéraire. Malheureusement la plupart des notes recueillies par ses soins sont restées inédites. A la lecture de ces dernières, nous nous apercevons que deux cathédrales antérieures à celle du Xlle siècle ont été découvertes. La première reste difficile à dater et peut appartenir à la période carolingienne ou au début de la période romane. La seconde datait du premier âge roman et il n'en subsiste aujourd'hui qu'une chapelle. Il est probable aussi que Frédéric Fabrège a levé le plan de l'ensemble épiscopal. Enfin, il a fouillé un grand nombre de tombes, portant plus particulièrement son attention sur celles des évêques. Malgré quelques zones d'ombres, les écrits de Frédéric Fabrège nous permettent de mieux comprendre l'histoire monumentale de Maguelone et de mieux cerner les rites funéraires du bas Moyen Age dans une communauté de chanoines réguliers en contact avec les fidèles du diocèse.
