La région de l'Aubrac, située dans le sud-ouest du Massif Central, constitue un exceptionnel conservatoire patrimonial et environnemental. La découverte d'une vingtaine de sites correspondant à des mas se trouvant entre 1100 et 1300 mètres d'altitude permet d'étudier l'habitat rural des XI-XIIe siècles. Ce dernier présente des caractéristiques architecturales liées au milieu montagnard: bâtisses enterrées, entrées aménagées, habitat et lieu destiné à la stabulation contigus. Un front de colonisation lié à un phénomène de surpopulation est certainement à l'origine de ces mas. Leur abandon précoce a laissé la place à de vastes pâturages établis par l'hôpital d'Aubrac sur lesquels l'habitat temporaire lié à la production fromagère est attesté dès le XVe siècle.
