Le castrum d’Aguilar à Tuchan (Aude). Une communauté oubliée à l’ombre de la forteresse royale.

Placed on the ancient border between the kingdoms of France and Spain, the seigneurial castle and, later on, royal fortress of Aguilar has long concealed the modest remains of a medieval “castrum” established on the same dominating position. A renewed interest focuses researchers’ attention on the traces of early agglomerations, the creation of which coincides with a perching phase of the habitat, the •incastellamento” of the XIth and XIIth centuries. This paper intends to show the reality of a village establishment at Aguilar thanks to a comprehensive approach using both archaeological research and consultation of available sources. The revision of the latter and the contribution of newly-found texts replace the Tuchan-Paziols basin in its historical background and retrace its destiny between the IXth and XIIIth centuries through the power gambling that shaped the region and its communities. After a visit of the •castrum” and the description of the objects found during field research, the study of the ancient settlements of the territories linked to the pech allows tackling the origins of the grouped habitat at Aguilar together with the problems of its evolution, while putting in prospect the originality of its agropastoral hold.

Situé sur l’ancienne frontière séparant les royaumes de France et d’Espagne, le château seigneurial puis forteresse royale d’Aguilar a longtemps occulté les vestiges discrets d’un castrum médiéval posé sur ce même relief. Un regain d’intérêt focalise à présent l’attention des chercheurs sur les traces d’anciennes agglomérations dont la création coïncide avec une phase de perchement de l’habitat, «l’incastellamento» des XIe et XIIe siècles. Cet article veut démontrer la réalité d’un établissement villageois sur Aguilar grâce à une approche globale utilisant la recherche archéologique et la consultation des sources disponibles. La révision de ces dernières, l’apport de nouveaux textes, replacent le bassin de Tuchan-Paziols dans son cadre historique et en retracent le destin du IXe au XIIIe siècles au travers des jeux de pouvoir qui ont façonné la région et ses communautés. Après une visite des ruines du castrum et la description des mobiliers trouvés en prospection, l’étude du peuplement antique des terroirs associés au pech permet d’aborder la genèse d’un habitat groupé sur Aguilar ainsi que la problématique de son évolution, tout en mettant en perspective l’originalité de son emprise agropastorale.
