Obwohl die Republikaner den Grundsatz der offiziellen Kandidatur gänzlich ablehnten, zögerten sie nicht, ihn selbst anzuwenden, als die Gefahr des Boulangismus sie dazu zwang. In spite of their opposition to the principle of official candidatures, the Republicans resorted to them, when they felt compelled by the Boulanger challenge. This is dearly established by the author, in his analysis of the Sept-Oct. 1889 election in the first district of Toulouse, where Ernest Constans, minister of the Interior as he was, barely gained the upper hand over the « boulangiste » Paul de Susini.

Bien que très opposés au principe de la candidature officielle, les républicains n'hésitèrent pas à y recourir quand le péril boulangiste les y accula. L'auteur l'établit clairement en analysant l'élection de septembre-octobre 1889 dans la 1ère circonscription de Toulouse, où Ernest Constans, bien que ministre de l'Intérieur, l'emporta difficilement sur le boulangiste Paul de Susini.
