Gefolgschaft im Aquitanien der Plantagenêt : Essai über eine besondere Form der Solidarität, 13.-14. Jahrhundert. Im ausgehenden Mittelalter waren alle Adligen bei Militäraktionen von einer Gefolgschaft umgeben. Je nach Führungspersönlichkeit, Auftrag und Begleitumständen war diese Gefolgschaft unterschiedlich groß und rekrutierte sich aus drei Gruppen. Die Mitglieder der Familia (Verwandte und Klienten) waren durch Blutsbande und Alltagssolidarität an den Chef gebunden. Die Vasallen, die in der Herrschaft oder in ihrer Nachbarschaft Lehen innehielten, ergänzten ihre Ränge. Fremde Elemente erweiterten, unter gegebenen Umständen, die Gefolgschaft, doch waren diese ausschließlich durch ihren Sold motiviert. In gewissen Maße wurde die Zusammensetzung der Gefolgschaft dann verändert, wenn die Familia innerhalb eines umfangreicheren Aufgebotes stand.

During military operations in the last centuries of the Middle Ages, all payed nobles are surrounded by a company. These companies, of various sizes according to the personality that commanded them and the circumstances, include three circles of recruitment.
