Der öffentliche Raum Montpelliers wird republikanisch : politische und geografische Symbole im « roten » Südfrankreich (1848-1914). Zwischen 1848 und 1914 war Montpellier im zentrum des erbitterten Kampfes zwischen den Republikanern einerseits und den royalistischen « Legitimisten » andererseits. Die Auseinandersetzung um die Kontrolle der städtischen Macht und der Konflikt um die Vorherrschaft im öffentlichen Raum nimmt in dieser stark von den Strukturen des Absolutismus geprägten Stadt interessante Ausmaße an. Denkmäler, Straßen und Plätze und Feiern sind im zentrum der Auseinandersetzung zwischen den Roten und den Weißen. Die Geografie Montpelliers zeigt jedoch, dass sich die Republikaner bereits vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg durchsetzen konnten, auch wenn der Widerstand katholischer und königstreuer Gruppierungen stark blieb und nie ganz verschwand.
The « Republicanization » of Public Space in Montpellier : Political and Geographical Symbols in the « Red Midi » (1848-1914). Between 1848 and 1914, Montpellier was the theater of a no holds barred struggle between Republicans and Legitimists. In a city that had been strongly marked by the imprint of absolute monarchy, the combat for control of local power was duplicated with a conflict for the symbolic appropriation of public space. Monuments, squares, streets and celebrations thus constituted the major stakes of the confrontation between « Reds » and « Whites » . On the eve of World War I, the symbolic geography of Montpellier testifies to the republican triumph but also of the capacity of resistance of a Catholic and royal heritage that was becoming patrimonialized.
Entre 1848 et 1914, Montpellier est le théâtre d’une lutte sans merci entre républicains et « légitimistes » . Dans une ville fortement marquée par l’empreinte de la monarchie absolue, le combat pour le contrôle du pouvoir local se double d’un conflit pour l’appropriation symbolique de l’espace public. Monuments, places, rues et célébrations constituent ainsi des enjeux majeurs de l’affrontement entre « Rouges » et « Blancs » . À la veille de la guerre de 1914, la géographie symbolique de Montpellier témoigne du triomphe républicain mais aussi de la capacité de résistance d’un héritage catholique et royal en voie de patrimonialisation.

En una ciudad en la que se nota mucho el sello de la Monarquía absoluta, la lucha por el control del poder local corre parejas con un conflicto sobre la apropiación del espacio público. Monumentos, plazas, calles y celebraciones se convierten así en campos predilectos del enfrentamiento entre « Rojos » y « Blancos » . En vísperas de la guerra de 1914, la geografía simbólica de Montpellier da testimonio del triunfo republicano pero también de la capacidad de resistir por parte de una herencia católica y real en vías de volverse patrimonial.
