The city of Xanthos was supplied with water by an aqueduct in Roman times. The work, 9.5 km long, started from a fine collecting gallery made of very large blocks. The channel level with the ground, 40 cm wide and 75 cm high, is still in good condition over great lengths. After collecting water from the springs along the valley, the aqueduct runs along the foot of a hill on a narrow terrace often propped by a retaining wall. It crosses three vales on one-arched bridges. Then comes a rather steep slope, and a large flat ground where the aqueduct is supported from place to place by a substruction of well-cut massive blocks. The present article briefly gives the results of our first survey of this aqueduct, which had never been studied so far.

La ville de Xanthos a été alimentée en eau courante par un aqueduc à l'époque romaine. L'ouvrage, long de 9,5 km, partait d'une belle galerie de captage en très grand appareil. Le canal, large de 40 cm et haut de 75 cm, est encore bien conservé sur de grandes longueurs, à fleur de sol. Après la traversée et la sortie de la vallée où se situent ses sources, il suit le versant d'un piémont, sur une étroite terrasse souvent accompagnée d'un mur de soutènement. Il y rencontre trois vallons franchis sur des ponceaux. Vient ensuite une descente assez rapide, puis un vaste replat où il était porté à certains endroits par une substruction en grand appareil. L'article présente brièvement les résultats de nos premières recherches sur cet aqueduc, qui n'avait jamais encore été étudié.

Ksanthos şehrinin su ihtiyacı Roma devrinden kalma bir su yoluyla besleniyordu. 9,5 kilometre uzunluğundaki bu eser kaba yontma taşlı birkaç kaynağı bir kanalda toplayan bir dehlizle başlıyordu. Genişliği 40 santimetre, derinliği 75 santimetre olan bu kaptaj kanalı yüzeyle eş seviyede, oldukça iyi korunmuştur. Kanal, kaynakların bulunduğu vadiyi geçtikten sonra, dar bir seki üzerinde yamacı takip eder. Üç küçük vadiyi köprülerle aşıp, hızlı bir inişle geniş bir ovaya gelir - ki bu ovada kanalın yapımı için kimi zaman masif kesme taş kullanılmıştır. Makalemiz, daha önce uzerinde hiç kimsenin çalışmadığı bu su yolu hakkında yaptığımız araştırmaların özeti niteliğindedir.
