Le témoignage qu'apporte la Constitution d'Athènes sur la procédure employée pour élire les archontes ne doit pas être récusé. Il s'accorde, en effet, avec les indications qu'Aristote fournit d'autre part dans la Politique. Solon avait organisé la désignation des archontes par tirage au sort. Abandonnée pendant la tyrannie, cette méthode a été rétablie en 487/6 et désormais appliquée selon le principe des dix tribus clisthéniennes.
