La révolte de 21 ap. J.-C. qui agita les trois provinces gauloises de la Gaule chevelue est un des rares événements documentés par les textes de l’histoire gauloise durant la période julioclaudienne. Tacite en est la source principale, mais l’étude d’un extrait antérieur de Velleius Paterculus permet de jeter un regard nouveau sur ces événements. La révolte, menée pour des raisons fiscales, est dirigée par l’Éduen Iulius Sacrovir, auquel Paterculus donne un relief particulier en le désignant par les termes exceptionnels de princeps Galliarum. Ces termes permettent de penser qu’il pourrait s’agir en réalité du grand-prêtre du culte impérial, ce dernier se déroulant en Gaule de manière commune aux trois provinces, au Confluent, près de Lugdunum. L’implication de l’assemblée du Confluent et de son grand-prêtre donnerait alors à cette révolte une signification particulière, en relation avec l’expression d’un espace politique gaulois commun.
