Paul Boucher and Frederic Ogée answer a questionnaire from the APLIUT concerning their reasons for writing their grammar book and the pedagogical and theoretical choices they made when preparing it. The book aims mainly at university level students and is intended to be practical and easy to use yet at the same time a reference book which provides in-depth analysis. Considerable space is devoted to the comparison of French and English. Theoretical linguistics sheds light on a number of questions which are often neglected in grammar books. The authors have attempted to strike a compromise between the simple collection of prescriptive rules and the overly theoretical book which loses sight of the immediate needs of non-specialist students. Frequent exercises allow the student to master each problem in turn. The extensive index and numbered paragraphs make consulting the book simple and easy.
