Contrastive study of a few discursive sequences in the “ result” section of a corpus of twenty research articles in mechanical engineering The reasoning process in the discourse patterns of specialised English and French has been assumed to be somehow different. The present contrastive study attempts to examine the validity of the hypothesis by analysing the discursive sequences in the result section of a corpus of research articles in mechanical engineering. Textual organization and the discursive operations are compared and characterized to indicate a slightly different approach to the perception of sciences. While the English authors tend to include scientific data in a demonstrative scheme, the French give greater importance to each piece of information. Assertion therefore becomes more salient in the English discourse.
