Comparative study of the distribution of adverb-adjective combinations with a special concern in English for Statistics

Adjectives functioning as attributes within nominal groups can be expanded into adjective groups. In most cases, such attributes are premodified by adverbs, with which they establish collocational links. In addition to intensifying the adjective, the adverb brings in subject-specific information as well. In this article, the focus is on the distribution of adverb-adjective combinations across three different corpora : highly subject-specific, general news reporting in specialized area, and general pleasure reading.

Au sein du groupe nominal, les adjectifs attributs et épithètes peuvent constituer des groupes adjectivaux plus larges. Dans bon nombre de cas, les adjectifs sont précédés par des adverbes avec lesquels ils établissent des liens collocationnels. En plus de son rôle d'intensifieur de l'adjectif, l'adverbe apporte aussi un complément d'information lié au domaine de la spécialité. Dans cet article, l'accent est mis sur la répartition des associations adverbe-adjectif à travers trois différents niveaux de langue : des textes hautement spécialisés, des articles de revue traitant de domaines variés et un texte d'anglais général.
