Internet : a welcome tool. Since 1992, the number of school children taking up the study of a foreign language to A level has dropped by an average of 10% a year. Languages departments of many universities have had to produce new curricula in order to attract enough students from a fairly volatile market. Employment related or semi-professional degrees are now being increasingly offered, which play down the linguistic competence necessary to the students and stress the social, economic and political features of the foreign countries concerned. This is greatly helped by a wider and constant access to the Internet facilities.

Le nombre de scolaires britanniques poursuivant l'étude d'une langue étrangère au niveau "A level" diminue d'environ 10% par an depuis 1992. Les départements de langues vivantes de nombreuses universités ont dû transformer leurs cursus et vendre à un marché assez volatile de nouveaux produits, plus directement appliqués au milieu professionnel, où les compétences linguistiques sont parfois réduites mais où l'acquisition des connaissances nécessaires des réalités sociales, économiques et politiques de l'étranger est fortement aidée par l'utilisation de l'Internet.
