The medieval ceramic in bas limousin from XIIth to XVIth century In the last past years the medieval ceramology research in bas Limousin increased. Today, a list of the main forms and of their decoration can be drawn up. These potteries do not properly speaking have an original pattern compared with these belonging to the neighbouring areas, but however they have specific caracteristics ; so ollae in black pottery were popular in the rural habitat and lasted very long showing the archaism of the country. On the other hand, in urban environment, glazed wares were spread as soon as the XIIIth century and were embellished with many ornementations at the end of the XIVth and in the XVth century. At last the trade enabled Limousin to import luxury products as soon as the XIVth century either of Saintonge or curiously from Provence particulary as regards archaic maiolicas.

Au cours des dernières années, la céramologie médiévale a accentué sa recherche en bas Limousin. Aujourd’hui, on peut dresser un catalogue des principales formes et de leur décor. Ces poteries ne présentent pas à proprement parler un faciès original par rapport aux régions avoisinantes ; elles possèdent cependant des caractéristiques spécifiques. Ainsi, les ouïes en terre réduite étaient généralisées dans l’habitat rural et persistèrent très tardivement dénotant l’archaïsme du pays. Par contre, en milieu urbain, des terres vernissées se généralisèrent dès la fin du XIIIe siècle, et furent agrémentées à la fin du XIVe siècle et au XVe siècle de décors abondants. Enfin, les diffusions commerciales permirent au Limousin d’importer des produits de luxe dès le XIVe siècle, soit de la Saintonge, soit plus paradoxalement de Provence, en particulier des majoliques archaïques.
