Aux origines de Rodez (Aveyron) : les fouilles de la caserne Rauch

The excavations in a two hectare area which is out of the way of the historical center of Rodez only gave away but pre-augustan remains which had not been destroyed by the following human occupations as it is often the case intra-muros. It is mainly composed of one ditch, three wells and nine pits which were supposedly implemented with the aim of receiving arranged deposits. Judging from these results, in particular the study of bones, the cavities from Rodez have not got any funerary function or character contrary to these from the Toulouse area but they are probably excavations for offerings related to the chthonian cult. The imported ceramics which are particularly numerous and varied bear out the pre-caesarian origins of Rodez.

La fouille d’un terrain de près de 2 ha, situé à l’écart du cœur historique de Rodez, n’a livré que des structures pré-augustéennes non bouleversées par les occupations suivantes comme c’est très souvent le cas intra-muros. Il s’agit surtout d’un fossé, de trois puits et de neuf fosses apparemment aménagées aux seules fins de recevoir les dépôts organisés observés. Au vu de ces résultats, notamment de l’étude ostéologique, il apparaît que les cavités ruthénoises n ’ont pas de fonction ou de caractère funéraire contrairement à certaines du Toulousain, mais sont vraisemblablement des excavations à offrandes liées à un culte chthonien. Le matériel d’importation, particulièrement abondant et diversifié, confirme les origines pré-césariennes de Rodez.
