L’urbanisme d’une agglomération secondaire : nouvelles découvertes aériennes à Barzan

The urban character of the site at Barzan was discovered in 1975 thanks to J. Dassié’s aerial photography. Since then further aerial photographs have been taken. Each year a new piece of the puzzle emerges and one can now glimpse the whole agglomeration, including the port. Apart from the temples, theatre, avenues and horrea already known, what is striking is the extent of the remains, the variety of sanctuary forms and the presence of a monumental ensemble recognisable as a forum. Equally one can recognise the double orientation of the urban network : a first phase along the port-temple 24 axis, and a second phase as the town extends to the north, along the axis of the Bordeaux-Saintes road.

Depuis la découverte, grâce aux photos aériennes de J. Dassié, en 1975, du caractère urbain du site de Barzan, les survols se sont poursuivis. Chaque année apparaît quelque nouveau morceau du puzzle et l'on peut désormais avoir un aperçu d'ensemble de l'agglomération et de son port. Outre les temples, théâtre, avenues et horrea déjà connus, ce qui frappe c'est l'étendue des vestiges, la variété des plans des sanctuaires et la présence d'un ensemble monumental, sans doute identifiable à un forum. Le réseau urbain se dessine également, avec une double orientation qui peut témoigner à la fois d'une extension de la ville vers le nord et du passage de la voie Bordeaux-Saintes.
