Les amphores de la place Camille-Jullian à Bordeaux

An exceptional stratigraphy covering a time span from the 1rst to the 15th century has been put to light at this urban site. It has allowed the study of the evolution of amphorae in the main town of the Bituriges vivisques back to Early Roman Empire until the beginning of the Middle Age. As far as Early Roman amphorae are concerned, this stratigraphy allowed for the first time to delimit the dates when the Dressel 2/4 from Tarraconensis arrived in Bordeaux. The stratigraphy also allowed to delimit the date when Dressel 28, Oberaden 74 and the Aquitaine type that were produced locally, occured for the first time and when they disappeared as well as to clarify the evolution of wine imports and the extension of the vineyard in the region of Bordeaux. For the first time too, owing to this field work, we have been able to catch in Bordeaux how Late Roman amphorae outbroke, increased and disappeared in the first part of the 7th century. Besides, this operation has revealed the important place hold by the trade between Bordeaux and the Middle-East, during the end of Antiquity.

La stratigraphie exceptionnelle, ininterrompue du Ier au XVe siècle, trouvée sur ce site urbain, nous a permis d’étudier l’évolution du matériel amphorique dans la capitale des Bituriges vivisques depuis le Haut-Empire jusqu’au début du Haut Moyen Age. En ce qui concerne les amphores du Haut-Empire, elle nous a permis pour la première fois à Bordeaux, de dater l’arrivée des Dressel 2/4 de Tarraconaise. De même, a-t-il été possible de cerner les dates d’apparition et de disparition des Dressel 28, Oberaden 74 et de type Aquitain produites localement et, partant, de préciser l’évolution des importations vinaires et le développement du vignoble dans la région de Bordeaux. Avec cette opération archéologique, c’est la première fois également que l’on a pu appréhender à Bordeaux l’arrivée, le développement et la disparition dans la première moitié du VIIe siècle des amphores de l’Antiquité tardive, et constater la place importante, que l’on ne soupçonnait pas, tenue par le commerce entre Bordeaux et le Moyen-Orient à la fin de l’Antiquité.
