The creation, at Périgueux, of a new Gallo-Roman museum dedicated to die ancient Vesunna of the Petrucorii, has encouraged further research concerning the Gallo-Roman town. A team, working with a coordinator, was set up, concentrating its initial efforts on the Vésone Tower. Even though the Tower has been the subject of a recent monograph, it nonetheless proved indispensable to take advantage of a series of archaeological sondages, and to reopen both the epigraphical and ornamental file, especially the hitherto almost completely neglected part dealing with interior decoration. All of this, besides shedding new light on the history of the Petrocorii capital’s best-known religions monument, has also enabled new restoration proposals, incorporating the latest research findings, to be put forward.

La création d’un nouveau musée gallo-romain à Périgueux dédié à l’antique Vesunna des Pétrucores a entraîné de nouvelles recherches sur la ville gallo-romaine. Lue équipe, réunie autour d’un P.C.R., a tout d’abord concentré ses travaux sur la “Tour de Vésone”. Celle-ci avait fait l’objet d’une monographie publiée en 1990. Il s’est avéré cependant indispensable de mettre à profit une série de sondages archéologiques, de rouvrir le dossier épigraphique ainsi que le dossier ornemental, celui du décor intérieur en particulier, jusqu’alors délaissé. La mise en perspective de toutes ces données permet aujourd’hui d'apporter un nouvel éclairage sur l’histoire du complexe monumental religieux le mieux connu de la capitale pétrucore et de livrer une proposition de restitution conforme aux dernières avancées de la recherche.
