Le remploi d’éléments architecturaux antiques : le cas de deux sarcophages du site des Sablons à Luxé (Charente)

The excavation of a necropolis dated between the fifth and tenth century in Luxé (Charente), unearthed, among a varied typology of funerary containers, tank sarcophagi obtained from the reuse of blocks belonging to antique monuments. Technological and iconographic analysis was performed on two of these tanks highlighting their manufacturing process and the tools used. The presence of this type of sarcophagus raises questions on the issue of the origin of this raw material as well as on the chronological attribution of such funerary containers. This could be indicative of the existence of a significant antique agglomeration in the area.

La fouille d’une nécropole à Luxé en Charente datée entre le Ve et le Xe s. a mis au jour, parmi une typologie variée de contenants funéraires, des cuves de sarcophages composées de blocs de remploi de monuments antiques. Une analyse technologique et iconographique a été effectuée sur deux de ces cuves révélant leur mode de fabrication et les outils utilisés. La présence de ce type de sarcophage amène à s’interroger sur la provenance de la matière première ainsi que sur l’attribution chronologique de tel contenant funéraire. Elle semble révélatrice de l’existence d’une agglomération antique importante sur la commune.
