仏 教 の 世 界 観 を 説 く 言 説 の 中 で 、 地 獄 の 詳 細 を 描 く 記 述 は 、 責 め 苦 の プ ロ セ ス を 彩 る さ ま ざ ま な 驚 く べ き 細 部 を 語 り 、 き わ め て 興 趣 に 富 ん だ も の で あ る 。 地 獄 の 十 王 を 描 く 『 十 王 経 』 の 絵 入 り 写 本 は 、 詳 細 な 研 究 の 対 象 と さ れ て き た が 、 敦 煌 の 壁 画 に 見 ら れ る 地 獄 の 様 相 に つ い て は 、 こ れ ま で あ ま り 顧 み ら れ る こ と が な か っ た 。 予 備 的 な 研 究 に よ れ ば 、 こ れ ら の 壁 画 は 、 大 き く 三 つ の カ テ ゴ リ ー に 分 け ら れ る こ と が 知 ら れ て い る 。 一 つ は さ ま ざ ま な 経 典 の 記 述 に 基 づ い た も の 、 第 二 に 世 界 の 宇 宙 論 的 な 階 層 を 描 く 中 で 地 獄 の 図 を 含 む も の 、 三 つ 目 に 地 蔵 菩 薩 と 十 王 を 描 き 、 地 獄 の 官 僚 的 な 様 相 を 示 す 壁 画 で あ る 。 本 研 究 で は 、 莫 高 窟 の 壁 画 の 中 で 、 最 初 の カ テ ゴ リ ー に 属 す る 地 獄 図 の 図 像 的 語 彙 と そ の 主 要 な 特 徴 を 検 討 す る 。

The descriptions of the various hells in Buddhist eschatological and cosmological literature constitute one of the most fascinating speculations on the characteristics of otherworldly realms elaborated by this religious system, which provides extravagant details on sinners’ atonement processes. While a number of important works have focused on the illustrated manuscripts of the Sūtra on the Ten Kings, which portrays the ten judges of Chinese “purgatory,” the visual narrative describing the theme of hell damnation, as seen in Dunhuang murals, has received less attention. Preliminary research has shown that these illustrations can be divided into at least three different categories: hell representations found in scenes illustrating various sūtras; damnation scenes in cosmological charts; and mural paintings of Dizang/ Kṣitigarbha showing bureaucratised representations of the underworld featuring the Ten Kings “system.” This paper sets out the major characteristics of the visual vocabulary of hell representations in Mogao murals that fall into the first two categories.

Les descriptions des enfers dans la littérature eschatologique et cosmologique bouddhiste constituent l’une des spéculations les plus fascinantes élaborées par ce système religieux, qui fournit des détails extravagants sur les processus d’expiation. Si les manuscrits illustrés du Sūtra des Dix rois, décrivant les dix juges du « purgatoire » chinois, ont fait l’objet d’études approfondies, le thème de la damnation infernale dans les peintures murales de Dunhuang a reçu moins d’attention. Des études préliminaires ont montré que ces illustrations peuvent être classées en trois catégories différentes : les représentations figurant dans des scènes de différents sūtra ; les scènes de damnation intégrées à des tableaux cosmologiques ; et les peintures murales associées à Dizang/Kṣitigarbha et aux Dix rois, représentant une image bureaucratisée de l’au-delà.
