L'altération de la craie dans le Bassin de Paris, pendant la période d'émersion de la fin du Crétacé, a provoqué la formation de sols dont on retrouve des témoins ; l'érosion de ces sols a fourni la matière de certains sédiments de la base du Paléogène. Ces sols et sédiments renferment les mêmes niveaux argileux : kaolinites, smectites et interstratifiés (7 -14Sm). Les kaolinites ont toutes une structure plus ou moins désordonnée. Les smectites sont essentiellement dioctaédriques, alumino-ferrifères ; elles appartiennent principalement aux beidellites mixtes. Les interstratifiés (7-14Sm) sont plus alumineux que les smectites. Les différents caractères structuraux et chimiques étudiés montrent que ces interstratifiés forment un groupe complexe, intermédiaire entre les kaolinites et les smectites avec lesquelles ils sont presque confondus aux limites du groupe. Ils ne correspondent pas à une espèce minérale définie, mais à une population d'édifices réguliers à séquences diverses et d'édifices irréguliers. Les beidellites relativement résistantes en milieu basique se transforment en interstratifiés (7-14Sm) quand le lessivage augmente. Les montmorillonites moins stables sont hydrolysées et donnent naissance aux kaolinites. On parvient ainsi à deux voies parallèles dans l'altération des séries crétacées suivant l'intensité du lessivage : montmorillonite - beidellite - interstratifiés (7-14Sm) montmorillonite - kaolinite Ces deux voies sont distinctes et les interstratifiés n'apparaissent pas comme un terme de passage entre les smectites et les kaolinites. Cependant, si le lessivage se prolonge, rendant le milieu acide, les interstratifiés sont à leur tour hydrolysés, ce qui explique la présence de la seule kaolinite dans les matériaux sableux.
