The researchers at the Oslo Institute of Criminology took as their object the prostitution market, rather than simply studying prostitutes. Backstreets: Prostitution, Money and Love describes not only the characteristics of the clients and the pimps but also the conditions of entry into prostitution, the places, and the avoidance or distancing techniques employed. What is most interesting is the invisible agent working on the prostitution market, constituted by the whole set of representations of prostitution, the definitions of masculinity and feminity, and, more generally, by representations of sexuality.
