Die Entstehung des modernen Staates : Hauptfragen eines Forschungsprogramms. Zwei Forschungsprogramme waren in den Jahren 1984 bis 1993 beim französischen CNRS und der Europäischen Stifung der Wissenschaften der Frage der Entstehung des modernen europäischen Staates gewidmet worden. Die gegenwärtige Veröffentlichung der im Programm der Europäischen Stiftung der Wissenschaften entstandenen Sammelbände unter dem Titel Origins of the Modem State gab Anlaß zu vorliegenden Reflexionen über eine solche Gemeinschaftsarbeit. Ausgehend von den persönlichen Historikererfahrungen des Autors versucht der Beitrag auf der Basis einer kurzen Feldanalyse der historischen Forschung in Frankreich und in Europa eine Reihe von Fragen aufzuwerfen, die bei einem solchen Rahmen nur allzugern im Dunkeln gelassen werden. Es wird für eine breit angelegte, zugleich vergleichende und langfristige Geschichte des Politischen (des Staates) plädiert, die zutiefst im Sozialen und ökonomischen (Feudalismus) verankert und eng mit einer Studie der sozialen Akteure (der Prosopographie) und der Kulturgeschichte verbunden wäre.

Origins of the modern State : issues involved in a research program. Between 1984 and 1993, two research programs were devoted to the origins of the modern European State, one at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (the French national center for scientific research) and the other at the Fondation Europeenne de la Science (The European Science Foundation). The forthcoming publication of the volumes resulting from the European Foundations' program, Origins of the Modern State, is an occasion to examine this collective undertaking. On the basis of his own experience as an historian and a succinct analysis of the field of historical research in France and Europe, the author's material defines a number of problems all too often passed over or not formulated. He outlines a plan for a broadbased (comparative and over the long term) history of the political sphere (the State) solidly rooted in the social and economic domains (feudalism), and closely tied in with a study of the social actors (prosopography) and cultural history.

La genèse de l'État moderne : enjeux et bilan d'un programme de recherche. De 1984 à 1993, deux programmes de recherche au CNRS et à la Fondation européenne de la science ont été consacrés à la genèse de l'État moderne européen. La parution, en cours, des volumes issus du programme de la Fondation européenne de la science, Origins of the Modem State, est l'occasion d'une réflexion sur une œuvre collective. À partir de sa propre expérience d'historien et d'une brève analyse du champ de la recherche historique en France et en Europe, l'auteur permet de poser plus clairement un certain nombre de problèmes, trop souvent rejetés dans l'obscurité du non-dit. Il dessine le projet d'une histoire large (comparative et dans le long terme) du politique (l'État) ancrée profondément dans le social et l'économique (le féodalisme), étroitement liée à l'étude des acteurs sociaux (la prosopographie) et à l'histoire culturelle.
