Project leaders and the remodelling of public action Leaders of social and urban projects are reflecting on their work, which is midway between a mission impossible and a mediating feat. This highly relationship-based occupation, initially militant, has become institutionalised over time, mainly through becoming mains-treamed into municipal structures. The many tensions pervading daily activities — both technical and political, local and central, spatial and social — together with status fragmentation, limit the building of a joint professional reference framework. The project leader is becoming the emblematic figure of change in current urban governance.

Entre la mission impossible et la performance médiatrice, les chefs de projet en développement social et urbain s'interrogent sur leur métier. D'origine militante, ce métier éminemment relationnel s'est institutionnalisé au fil du temps en s'intégrant notamment dans les structures municipales. Les multiples tensions qui traversent son exercice quotidien — entre technique et politique, local et global, spatial et social — et l'émiettement des statuts limitent la construction d'un référentiel professionnel commun. Le chef de projet devient la figure emblématique des mutations de la gouvernance urbaine actuelle.
