Islam's Difficult Visibility The Ecology of Places of Worship in St-Etienne The industrial city of St. Etienne has welcomed North African migrants since the First World War. Although under close company supervision, Muslim workers continued to practice their religion in semi-secrecy. With the population setting down roots in the seventies, there was to be an increasing demand for a greater public visibility of places of worship in the city. Housed, however, in prefabricated buildings, industrial wastelands or public property set aside for the social sector, Muslims' new places of worship have not really as yet won public recognition.

Ville industrielle, Saint-Étienne a accueilli des immigrants du Maghreb dès la première guerre mondiale. Fortement encadrés par les entreprises, les ouvriers musulmans ont pourtant pratiqué leur religion dans une semi-clandestinité. La sédentarisation dans les années soixante-dix va progressivement susciter la demande de reconnaissance publique de lieux de cultes dans la ville. Bâtiments préfabriqués, friches industrielles ou mètres carrés sociaux, les nouveaux lieux de culte musulman aujourd'hui n'ont pas vraiment acquis droit de cité.
