Writing at a time characterized by the triumph of the ideology of Progress, the greatest admirations of Léon Bloy, who was never one for half measures in love and loathing, were directed towards women mystics. Indeed, he granted their writings a choice place, and reread them constantly : Theresa of Avila and Bridget of Sweden informed all his life and works. Nor did he make a secret of his esteem for Angela of Foligno, Maria d’Agreda, and Anne-Catherine Emmerich, who both accompanied him throughout his adult life. He also left several writings concerning Mélanie Calvat, a highly controversial contemporary figure. The issues raised by this question are vast, and touch on the fields of anthropology as well as novelistic writing, while also taking on a clearly polemical dimension. This paper will especially examine how these women embody a creative tension between the individual order and the collective one.

À une époque marquée par le triomphe de l’idéologie du progrès, les plus grandes admirations de Léon Bloy, lui dont les amours et les haines ne sont jamais en demi-teinte, vont à des femmes mystiques. Il accorde en effet une place de choix à leurs écrits qu’il ne cesse de relire. Thérèse d’Avila, Brigitte de Suède imprègnent la vie et l’oeuvre de l’écrivain. Il ne fait pas mystère non plus de son extrême déférence pour Angèle de Foligno, pour Marie d’Agreda, ou encore pour Anne-Catherine Emmerich, qui l’accompagnent durant toute sa vie d’adulte. Il consacre encore plusieurs écrits à Mélanie Calvat, sulfureuse contemporaine. Les enjeux que soulève cette question sont vastes et touchent à la fois à l’anthropologie, à la création romanesque, tout en ayant une dimension assurément polémique. Cet article étudiera notamment la manière dont ces femmes figurent une tension féconde entre l’ordre individuel et l’ordre collectif.
