The Jawi people from the southern Thai provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat (which originally were part of the ancient Patani sultanate) make up the most important part of the muslim minority of Thailand. In the roof structure of their houses, they systematically place a piece of wood called "this-wood-above", which has a triple function : symbolic, identificatory and practical.
