L'avènement du régime khmer rouge en avril 1975 marqua le début d'une aventure étrange et meurtrière pour les intellectuels cambodgiens, écartelés entre un patriotisme intransigeant et une foi romantique dans une révolution qui se voulait transcender toutes les expériences révolutionnaires de l'histoire du socialisme. La majorité des intellectuels formés à l'étranger choisit donc de rentrer au pays apporter leur contribution à la reconstruction d'un Cambodge dévasté par des années de guerre, encouragés par quelques-uns des dirigeants khmers rouges auxquels ils accordaient une grande confiance. Ils devaient découvrir très rapidement et avec horreur la réalité d'une révolution, qui comme ses inspiratrices, dévorait ses enfants dans une rage destructrice tragique et ubuesque. Sous la direction de Ieng Sary, un véritable système concentrationnaire se mit en place d'où l'on n'échappait que pour mourir entre les mains d'un appareil de sécurité moyenâgeux. Sur les centaines d'intellectuels rentrés au Cambodge, une poignée devait survivre par chance ou pour avoir pris une part active au système. L'intelligentsia cambodgienne fut décimée et certains de ses bourreaux, au premier chef Ieng Sary, mènent une existence paisible, épargnés par les projets de jugement des auteurs de l'un des plus grands crimes de génocide du XXe siècle.
