A Dvāravatī Votive Tablet Reconsidered

A Dvāravatī votive tablet was originally identified as a depiction of the Buddha’s miracle of double appearances ; more recently, the subject has been called the Eight Great Bodhisattvas or, simply, a Buddhist assembly. In this brief article it is proposed, on the basis of literary evidence, that the subject is “ Under the Rājāyatana Tree, the Buddha Visits the Kingdom of the Nāgas, Awaited by Bodhisattvas on the Bordering Mountain.” The identification, if correct, has implications for the understanding of the relations between Sri Lanka and Dvāravatī in the seventh to eighth centuries.

Une tablette votive de style Dvāravatī a d’abord été interprétée comme représentant le Double Miracle. Plus tard, on y a vu une représentation des huit grands bodhisattva voire, comme Pierre Baptiste et Thierry Zéphir, celle d’une «Assemblée bouddhique » . Dans ce bref article, l’auteur suggère, en s’appuyant sur des données empruntées à la littérature, qu’elle a pour sujet la scène suivante : «Sous l’arbre Rājāyatana, le Bouddha visite le royaume des nāga, tandis que des bodhisattva l’attendent sur les monts avoisinants. » Si cette interprétation s’avérait correcte, elle obligerait alors à étudier les relations entre Sri Lanka et Dvāravatī aux alentours des VIIe et VIIIe siècles sous un nouvel angle.
