This essay examines the history of the cult of the Three Immortal Masters among whom two masters Huang and a master Xing, the most influential deified Daoist ritual masters since the twelfth century in the west of Fujian province, southeast China. This cult gave the opportunity for different social groups to express their understandings regarding “legitimacy.” The analysis focuses on the ways in which different groups have built the legitimacy of this cult. It is also observed in the analysis that the elements of this cult appeared gradually. It is a stratified development that has created today’s cult of the Three Immortal Masters.
