In a big international firm such as Siemens, one can observe a tendency towards centralisation, to save running costs and at the same time towards decentralisation, to be closer to the client. In terms of telecommunication, this has led to the adoption of three systems adapted to three different spatial scales as well as three different volumes of exchange. The WAN (Wide Area Networks) system deals with low flow international communications ; the MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) system is used for communication involving a higher flow between the different departments of the firm ; the LAN (Local Area Network) is used for very high flow communication within the same department. It is possible that a new technique called ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode), now being tested, will help simplify at least partially, this organisational set-up of the exchange space in firms.

Au sein d'une grande entreprise internationale comme Siemens, on observe à la fois une tendance à la centralisation pour réaliser des économies de fonctionnement et à la décentralisation pour être au plus près du client. Sur le plan des télécommunications, cela se traduit par l'adoption de trois systèmes de télécommunications adaptées à des échelles spatiales différentes et à des volumes d'échange également différents. Le système WAN (Wide Area Networks) correspond aux communications internationales à faible débit ; le système MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) est utilisé pour les communications à plus fort débit entre les différents services de l'entreprise ; le système LAN (Local Area Network) est utilisé pour les gros débits au sein d'un même service. Il est possible qu'une nouvelle technique ATM à l'essai (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) permette de simplifier au moins partiellement ce schéma d'organisation de l'espace d'échange au sein de l'entreprise.
